REPRESENTATION NOW: THE SUM OF IT ALL SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY - MADRID CAMPUS MADRID, SPAIN

Madrid

From: 16/04/2010 - until: 17/04/2010

This international and cross-disciplinary conference centers on representation. It is a term that points to an array of phenomena, from representations as they play out in mass media discourse and “stand in” for reality, to issues of political representation in which a surrogate formally stands in for the ostensible interests of a population. What is new in our concepts and practices of representation? And what constitutes “old wine in new bottles”? Over the course of two days, we assay to extend and rigorously tease out the multiple senses of representation, going beyond post-modern celebration to orient to problems and possibilities in this volatile post-millennial moment.

We are very pleased to announce that Profesor Teun van Dijk of Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona will deliver the conference’s Keynote Address.

Official languages of the conference: English and Spanish.

The following are designated as “Areas of Interest”:

* News Media & Journalism: Representations of Reality

* Representations of Identity (Gender, Class, Race, Ethnicity, Alterality)

* Ethnographic Representation: Theoretical & Empirical Examinations

* Representation of Radicalism & Social Movements

* Representations of Change, Volatility and Crisis

* Self-Reflexive Representation: Media & Journalism Reflect on Themselves

* New Media: Representational Strategies & Effects

* Documentary Now and TV Verité

* Cartography

* Political Representation in the New Millennium
